Esmée is one of Copenhagen’s coolest restaurants: a stylish brasserie near Kongens Nytorv, serving classic French food with a Nordic twist. We went with our two cheeky monkeys one sunny evening, and it was a lovely evening.
The Setting
Esmée is steps from Nyhavn and the Royal Danish Theatre. Inside, it’s sleek but warm, with polished wood, soft lighting and green accents. The terrace is perfect for people-watching on a summer evening.

What to Order
I started with a perfectly made martini, then we shared a selection of small plates. The standout was the garlic bread: soft, buttery and filled with just the right amount of garlic.
For mains, we shared the roast chicken with chanterelles, which was hearty but refined. The truffle mac and cheese on the side stole the show: creamy, rich and full of earthy truffle. It’s the kind of comfort food you think about for weeks.

Service
The service was attentive without hovering. The staff knew the menu well and were happy to suggest wines or explain dishes, which I always appreciate.
Lena’s Tips
- Book ahead. Especially if you want a terrace table in summer.
- Order the garlic bread. And the truffle mac and cheese.
- Bring the kids. It’s smart but relaxed, and ours were very welcome.
The Verdict
Esmée is on the pricier side, but you’re paying for quality, style and an evening that feels quintessentially Copenhagen. It’s now firmly on my list for every visit.
